OSTEOPATHY

Treatment during pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a time of significant change. During pregnancy, your body has to go through several stages - both hormonally and physically. As your baby grows, your body has to accommodate this with significant postural changes; this is facilitated by the softening of the ligaments in your spine, pelvis and rib cage from the release of hormones.

These changes mostly happen smoothly, however you may experience aches and pains as your spinal curves are changing. Underlying musculoskeletal problems may be aggravated causing backache, sciatica or neck pain. Symptoms such as heartburn, pubosymphysis joint discomfort, local circulatory problems or digestive issues may also be experienced.

Osteopathic techniques during pregnancy can help your spine and pelvis to accommodate changes that occur during pregnancy.

Treatment may reduce the tension in your body, and allow your muscles, bones and ligaments to be in the best balance possible for your baby’s descent into the pelvis to ease the birth .

Post Partum Treatment

Even a ‘normal labour’ can strain your pelvis, sacrum and coccyx, lower ribs and diaphragm, potentially affecting your back and pelvis alignment. Any intervention during birth such as Caesareans or epidurals may cause excessive tension anywhere in the baby’s body.

If the bones and ligaments are restricted, this can travel up through your spine to your head. You may experience a wide spectrum of symptoms such as

  • chronic backache

  • varicose veins

  • early uterine prolapse

  • bladder issues such as stress incontinence

  • chronic exhaustion

  • postnatal depression.
