What happens in a consultation?
-
When you come to me for a treatment, we will work together to try to understand the cause of your symptoms. I will take a full case history of issues and possible causes, with not only details of the symptoms that are affecting you, but also details of past trauma or health issues. I will check your past medical history, medications being taken and results from X-rays or other tests eg blood tests etc.
-
Then I will carry out a physical examination, looking at posture, assessing movements, feeling any areas of tissue tension or joint restriction and clinical testing performed to check the integrity of the nervous system.
Often on the first appointment, it may be necessary to undress to your underwear so it’s a good idea to bring a vest and shorts or leggings to the appointment.
I will then ask you to lie down and further check the range of ease and comfort of various areas and gradually start building up a comprehensive picture of your body and how it functions.
-
Treatment will involve gentle contact to different parts of the body to feel the strain patterns and how your body is trying to resolve them. Diagnosis and treatment are interconnected and it is important to not only find which of your tissues are causing the symptoms (eg muscle, ligaments or intervertebral disc strain) but also what has caused this problem to develop and how to prevent a future recurrence.
Your symptoms may be caused by the long lasting effects of an old injury or accident in the past that your body has been struggling to accommodate. All parts of your body may be considered because the cause of your symptoms are often distant from the area of symptoms; for example even if you are experiencing low back pain, I may spend some time releasing strains and tensions in your head and neck.
My patients often report feeling very relaxed and may experience a sense of warmth and well being.
-
After your treatment, it’s recommended that you try not to do any strenuous exercise or lifting for 24-48 hours. This is to allow your body to rebalance without straining it and let the treatment work through.
You may feel some relief from your symptoms immediately, but more commonly you may notice things start to improve after a few days or even a week.
I will also look at your posture, lifestyle, and may give you exercises to help improve the symptoms and prevent their recurrence.
